Front Cover Construction

I have designed a layout for my magazine front cover. I have added a few slanted text areas to follow the common conventions.

This is the colour scheme I am going to use for my magazine. I have chosen these colour as they are bright and stand out well. They also fit the style of pop magazines to fit with the common conventions.

I am going to use Photoshop to edit some of my photos for my magazine.

I am going to use this photo I took for the front cover. Before I can put it on the front cover, I need to take away the background so it is blank.

I used the magic eraser tool to remove the background. It basically takes away any colour in the image that you select. Now I need to soften the edges as it doesn't look very smooth.

I am going to use this photo for my double page spread. This was chosen because the model is in focus, a medium close up camera shot, and has direct address. The pose is fun and quirky which makes for a good main focus photo. This photo will set the mood for the entire magazine.

I removed the background of the image but lost some of the models hair due to the red being too visible behind it. I used the background eraser tool and magic wand tool to do this.
To fix the erased hair, I used the liquify tool to pull the existing hair down to a flowy shape. This doesn't look very realistic but it doesn't matter too much as some of the hair will be covered by other images on the magazine.
I added a small amount of volume to pony tails but not a noticeable amount as I didn't want it to look fake.

I dropped the image onto a white background that is the size and shape of a magazine. I also added some shapes ontot he image in the colours of my colour scheme.
I added the image of makeup that I edited earlier into the circle shape. This is going to be for the competition being advertised.
I changed the background colour to a light blue to match the colour scheme better.
I used the font 'cheri 2' for my masthead and used blue for the colour. I used the colour pipette for this colour so it would be the same colour as the models dress.
Although I haven't chosen what my cover lines with be yet (one will be advertising the double page spread), I have made space for them. I have also chosen the font I will be using, which is the font used for 'cover line'
I have chosen the font, colour and placing of the main cover line. I have also added some doodle to the image as there was too much blank space. I used the brush tool to do this and used a wet media brush.
I dulled down the colours within my magazine as they looked too harsh.
I added some extra text and a box. The box was added because the text was lost in the centre of the page.  This will help the reader to see the main cover line and cause it to stand out.

I created these lines on Microsoft word using the shape tool.
I made up some numbers to put under the lines.
I put them together and this is the final bar code that I will use on my front cover.

The masthead wasn't bright enough or standing out enough so I changed the colour and added a block background. The font was kept the same as that was chosen earlier and still fit in with the design. I also added the bar code, issue number and price.

This is one of my cover story photos. This photo was chosen as the pose used will fit with the cover line caption chosen. It has good lighting and was best in focus out of the photos taken in this photo shoot.

I edited the background out using the background eraser toll on photoshop. Any extra details were removed with the regular eraser tool.

The magic brush tool was used to add lipstick, a more golden complexion and whiter teeth.

Borders were added with colours from the front cover. This kept the colour scheme throughout the front cover.

This is my other cover story photos. This was chosen because the pose is relaxed and the model looks happy. It is in focus and the lighting is natural.

I removed the background using the background eraser tool and regular eraser tool to do touch ups.

The background was changed to a light blue that matches the background of the front cover. This was done using the fill tool.

The two edited photos were added to the front cover and a border was added to the photo on the left.

I changed the text boxes for the cover stories. They are now tighter to the text. This gives a more modern, sleek effect.
This is my final product.
